The University of Pittsburgh is a distinguished public research university originally established in 1787 as the Pittsburgh Academy located in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, USA. After shifting to its current location in the Oakland neighborhood of the city it was renamed The University of Pittsburgh in 1908. It was a private institution until 1966 after becoming part of the Commonwealth System of Higher Education. It includes 17 undergraduate and graduate schools and colleges located at its urban Pittsburgh campus. Pittsburgh is a member of the prestigious Association of American Universities (AAU) that includes 63 leading doctorate-granting research institutions in North America. Since its establishment, Pittsburgh has been known for its liberal arts education and tops in the field of sciences, research, humanities, and others.
The campus size is 145 acres accommodating 23,466 full time and 1,087 part-time undergraduates and 7,280 full time and 1,911 part-time Graduate/Doctoral Students. In 2018, the university was the third-largest recipient of federally sponsored health research funding among U.S. universities and received research funding from the National Institutes of Health.

- Upperclass students can choose apartment-style accommodations, which offer a more independent living environment with modified services and amenities. Apartment-style accommodations include a kitchen, and dining and living areas, and accommodates one to four students. The University furnishes each apartment and provides telephone, cable TV, online network access and all other utilities
- Graduate students are not eligible for on-campus housing
