It was the 6th university to be established in Central Europe, though it was closed in the year 1798 before getting re-established in 1919. Of late, it is considered to be one of the leading universities of Germany. With 50,000 plus students, it has been now recognized as one amongst the largest Germany universities. In 2020, the University of Cologne was ranked 157th all across the world by Times Higher Education.
