The University of Copenhagen was founded on 1st June 1479 when King Christian I received the approval of Pope Sixtus IV for its establishment. It is counted amongst the oldest universities in Denmark as well as in Northern Europe. The university stopped operating during the civil war that began in 1533. It was reopened in 1537 in the Church of Our Lady. The university’s first current building was inaugurated on 13th October 1839. At present, it consists of 3 academic departments, six faculties, and over 200 research centers. The institution holds the membership of the International Alliance of Research Universities (IARU).

UCPH features four main campuses across Denmark. Three of these campuses namely, City Campus, South Campus, and North Campus, are situated in Copenhagen while one is located in Frederiksberg. The North Campus houses most of the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences. The City Campus is home to the Central Administration, the Faculty of Social Sciences and a few parts of the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences. The South Campus includes the Faculties of Theology, Law and Humanities and a small part of the Faculty of Science. The Frederiksberg Campus houses some sections of the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences. Besides these four major campuses, the Faculties of Science and Health & Medical Sciences also occupy the Taastrup Campus situated in Taastrup, Copenhagen.
