The Leiden University Founded in the year 1575,  (abbreviated as LEI) is a public institution of higher education and research in Leiden, Netherlands. Set up by William, the Prince of Orange, it is one of the top international research universities in and around Europe. Known for its notable foundations, student-run bodies and importance on social sciences, it is the oldest university in the country. It is a certified member of the Coimbra Group and one of the founding members of the League of European Research Universities.

The university has no core campus but its buildings are situated across the city of Leiden. Notably, university buildings like Gravensteen, are counted amongst the oldest ones while buildings namely Gorlaeus and Lipsius are more up to date. The university has a large campus in The Hague, which represents six of the seven faculties and is home to international studies, faculty of governance and global affairs, sciences and liberal arts. The university in total has 29 research institutes based in Leiden and The Hague. Also, the university is all equipped with a range of facilities to support students with their studies. It maintains a library that houses over 5.2 million books and 50 thousand journals related to different subjects. Not just this, it holds an array of globally famous collections of Oriental and Western manuscripts, printed books, drawings, photographs and maps, which may be helpful to both students and the faculty for various learning, teaching and research purposes.
