What is SSC?

Staff Selection Commission (SSC) is a government organisation that conducts various exams every year to recruit candidates for Group-B and -C posts in various ministries/departments/organisations of Government of India. This article talks about all SSC exams in India.

SSC CGL

The SSC CGL is one of the most sought after Staff Selection Commission exams conducted annually to recruit candidates for various Group B and Group C posts. The recruitment is done in various departments, ministries and organizations of the Central Government.

The notification for SSC CGL 2020 is expected to be released by September 2020 by the commission, hence the tentative dates for the same are as follows:

*Note: Candidates must keep in mind that the CGL Exam that is under process this 2020 is for the recruitment of the CGL Exam 2019. The exams were slated to be held last year, i.e. in 2019 but due to certain reasons, they were delayed.

Certain important facts about the SSC CGL Exam 2019 are:

  • The SSC CGL Result for Tier I exam released on July 1st 2020.
  • The SSC CGL Tier-II 2019 exam dates Revised – November 2nd to November 5th 2020
  • The SSC CGL official notification released on October 31, 2019.
  • As per SSC CGL Eligibility criteria, a bachelor degree holders in any stream or discipline can apply for this exam.
  • The SSC CGL exam will be held in four stages or tiers .i.e Tier – 1, Tier -2, Tier – 3, and Tier – 4.
  • Interested candidates can apply for SSC online at ssc.nic.in till November 28, 2019
  • The application fee for the general category is INR 100, while the reserved category and female candidates are exempted from it.
  • Each stage acts as a qualifying stage.

Exam Pattern of SSC CGL Tier,1,2,3 and 4

  1. Tier – 1 will take place in multiple slots via computer mode, with objective type questions.
  2. Tier – 2 will comprise two papers – Quantitative Aptitude and English of about 200 marks
  3. Tier – 3 is a descriptive type exam that is designed to test the written skills of candidates in the Hindi/English language.
  4. Tier – 4 is conducted exclusively for the post of Assistant Audit Officer.

SSC CGL Eligibility

Qualification :

  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with at least 60 % Marks in Mathematics in 12th standard Or
  • Bachelor’s Degree in any subject with Statistics as one of the core subjects.

Age Limit

SSC has increased the age limit for SSC CGL Recruitment, though the age varies for different posts. The minimum age limit defined for SSC CGL is 27 years and the maximum is 32 years.

Registration for SSC CGL 

The application form for SSC CGL will be made available on the official website. Candidates can fill the application form in online mode only by visiting the official portal (different for different regions) of SSC.

  • Candidates need to register by entering his/her email ID, phone number and password,
  • An SSC registration number will be issued,
  • Use the given registration number and password to log in,
  • Fill the detailed application form and upload scanned photographs and signature as per the dimensions specified in the JPEG format.

Candidates would be selected through a 4-tier selection process of SSC CGL, in which the fourth tier would be of qualifying nature only.

  • Tier 1 comprises about 100 MCQs based on the general aptitude to be done within an hour.
  • Tier 2 is a descriptive test comprising two papers of Mathematics and English with each being of 200 marks and 2 hours duration.
  • Tier 3 would be a subjective exam of 1-hour. Tier 4 would be a typing test/computer proficiency test.

SSC Syllabus for CGL 2020

The tier-wise SSC syllabus for the examination is given below:

Tier I SSC Syllabus for CGL

The major sections asked in SSC CGL Preliminary Exam are General Awareness, Reasoning, Quantitative Aptitude And English Language.

Tier II SSC Syllabus for CGL

Mains Exam will be conducted online and is an objective multiple-choice exam.

The major sections in Mains Exam are Quantitative Aptitude, English Language and Comprehension, Statistics, General Studies (Finance and Economics)

Tier III SSC Syllabus for CGL

  • Tier – III of SSC CGL exam is a descriptive exam to test the writing skills of the candidates in English/Hindi.
  • The mode of examination is offline and students are required to write essays, precision writing, application, letter, etc.
  • The exam carries 100 marks and the time allotted for the same is 60 minutes.
  • The time allotted for candidates belonging to PWD category is increased to 80 minutes.
  • Tier – III paper is given by specific candidates who are interested only for the post of “Statistical Investigator Grade-II” & “Compiler”.

SSC CGL 2020 Tier IV Syllabus

Tier – IV examination comprises a couple of skill sets required for certain Government Posts all over the country.

  • DEST (Data Entry Speed Test): For the post of Tax Assistant (Central Excise and Income Tax), Dest Exam through SSC CGL exam is conducted to check the typing speed of the candidate.

The candidatures are given an article in English which they have to type on the designated computer. A candidate is required to type 2000 words in 15 minutes

  • CPT (Computer Proficiency Test): Word Processing, Spreadsheets, and Generations of slides are three modules that are important for this exam and the commission demands a candidate to be proficient in it for the post of CSS, MEA, Inspector (Central Excise), Inspector (Preventive Officer), Inspector (Examiner).

SSC CGL Result 2020

The result for SSC CGL for 2020 will be declared once the notification is released and the exam is conducted successfully.

Result for SSC CGL will be published on the SSC official website(https://ssc.nic.in). Candidates would be required to login to the SSC online portal to check their results.

The results would be compiled in a post-wise and marks-wise manner, with the candidate scoring highest marks overall being credited with All India Rank (AIR).

SSC GD

The SSC General Duty – GD Exam is conducted by the Staff Selection Commission.

The SSC GD Exam is conducted to appoint candidates who can fill the various posts available in paramilitary organisations such as BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSB, NIA, SSF and Rifleman in Assam Rifles.

SSC GD Recruitment

GD recruitment 2020 is expected to start soon. Candidates are advised to visit the official SSC page regularly to remain updated about the upcoming notification, eligibility criteria, SSC syllabus and SSC exam dates of GD Exam.

The last recruitment process of SSC GD 2018-19 has been initiated with the release of the official SSC GD Notification to select candidates for the post of constable in BSF, CRPF, CISF, ITBP, SSF, SSB, NIA and riflemen.

The entire recruitment process of SSC GD is conducted in four stages: Physical Standard Test (PST), Physical Efficiency Test (PET), computer-based test and lastly the medical test.

SSC GD Notification 2020

SSC had also released the exam date for SSC GD Constable Medical examination 2018-19. The detailed medical examination of the candidates who qualified the PET/PST test is scheduled to happen from 9 January 2020 to 13th January 2020.

SSC GD Selection Process 2020

SSC GD Written Exam Pattern 2020

The first phase of SSC GD Exam 2020 will be the Objective Type Written Exam, The SSC GD Written Exam will be conducted through online mode only.

To compete in the SSC GD Physical Test, one must qualify the written test first.

Each question carries 1 mark and time duration for the exam will be 2 hours (120 minutes). Matriculation level questions will be asked in the Exam. SSC Online examination will be conducted in English and Hindi Language.

Physical Standard Test/ Physical Efficiency Test Pattern

The Physical Test of SSC GD is a very important phase for those candidates who want to apply for this exam. All candidates will have to undergo a physical endurance & measurement test.

The Physical test doesn’t carry any marks but it is mandatory to clear the test. If you fail in the physical test then you won’t be able to clear the SSC GD Exam.

SSC GD Physical Standard for Male Candidates

  • Height – 170 cm.
  • Chest – 81 (Unexpanded), 85 (Expanded)
  • Race – 5 km in 24 minutes.
  • Long Jump – 14 feet (In three chances)

As mentioned above, in this paper candidates need to write an essay and letter/application that tests the writing skills of the candidates.

Tier III SSC Syllabus for CHSL

This exam will be a skill/typing test which would be of qualifying nature. The final merit of the selected candidates will be based on the total score obtained in the Tier – I and Tier – II exams.

Eligibility Criteria for SSC CHSL 

There are 3 important criteria that a candidate must fulfil to be eligible for the CHSL exam by SSC.

The SSC CHSL Eligibility criteria are as follows:

  1. Citizenship: The candidate must be a citizen of India or a subject of Nepal or a subject of Bhutan or a Tibetan refugee who came over to India before January 1, 1962, to settle down permanently.

A person who has migrated from the following lands and wishes to permanently reside in India are also eligible:

2. Age Limit: Age limit for the post is 18-27 years as on 01-08-2020 (i.e. candidates born not before 02-08-1993 and not later than 01-08-2002).

3Educational Qualification:

For LDC/JSA, PA/SA. DEO (except DEO in C&AG), the candidate must have passed 12th standard or equivalent examination from a recognized board of a university. Whereas for Data Entry Operator (DEO) in the Office of the Comptroller and Auditor General of India (C&AG): 12th Standard pass in Science stream with Mathematics as a subject from any recognized Board or equivalent.

SSC JE 2020

To fill the Group – ‘B’ posts in Civil, Mechanical, Electrical, Quantity Surveying and Contract domain, the SSC conducts the annual examination for the recruitment of Junior Engineers (JE).

SSC JE Notification 2020

SSC released the SSC JE 2020 notification on August 13th, 2019. As per the SSC JE notification, the last date to apply for the position closed on September 16th, 2019. Click on the above-linked page to download the official SSC JE Notification for easy reference.

Last SSC JE Official notification released by the Staff Selection Commission was on the 1st February 2019 to recruit fresh engineering graduates for the post of Junior Engineers (Mechanical, Electrical, Civil and Quantity Surveying and Contracts).

SSC JE Vacancy

The vacancies for the SSC JE post were not announced in the initial official notification.

On January 7th, 2020, SSC through an addendum announced that the total number of SSC JE vacancies that sums up to 4893 for the JE exam 2020. 

Similarly, on 15th February 2019, the tentative vacancy of SSC JE post was announced through an addendum that the number of SSC JE vacancies for 2018-19 exam summed up to 1601 positions in total.

SSC JE Apply Online & Application Fee 2020

This year i.e. for 2020 the SSC JE online application process started on August 13th and ended by September 16th, 2019.

For the year 2018, SSC online application process of JE exam commenced from February 01, 2019, and continued up to February 25, 2019 (until 5.00 P.M.).

Candidates who wish to take the exam this year are required to apply online on the link made available in the SSC official website, which is particularly meant for SSC registration purposes.

Given below is the procedure for filling the SSC online application for the exam, which consists of two parts:

  1. One-Time SSC Registration
  2. SSC Online Application Form

1. One-Time SSC Registration: For this type of SSC registration, a candidate should read the instructions which are updated in the notice of examination carefully before proceeding to fill up the SSC online ‘Registration Form’ and ‘Application Form’.

The candidate is required to open the SSC official website (ssc.nic.in) and click on ‘Register Now’ provided in the SSC Login section of the website.

It is essential to keep the following documents handy during SSC registration:

  • Mobile Number/Email ID which should be verified through OTP. During SSC registration, the User ID of the candidate will be his/the Email ID that he/she had provided earlier.
  • Update Aadhaar Number or Aadhaar Enrollment Number as an ID proof. If the Aadhaar card is not available, the candidate can show any of the following documents later: Voter ID Card, PAN Card, Passport, Driving License, School/ College ID Card, Employer ID (Govt/ PSU/ Private).
  • Information about the name of the Board, Roll Number and Year of Passing the 10th standard examination.
  • Have a scanned colour passport-size photograph in JPEG format (20 KB to 50 KB).
  • Have a scanned signature in JPEG format (10 KB to 20 KB).

Candidates should be extra cautious about filling up the following information to complete the One-Time Registration process:

  1. Basic details like name, date of birth, 10th exam details, etc.
  2. Additional details like category, nationality, visible identification mark, etc.
  3. Contact details.
  4. Photo signature and LTI.

Candidates are required to complete the SSC Registration process within 7 days failing which their SSC Registration details saved would be permanently deleted.

It is also important to note that the candidature of a particular candidate may get cancelled in case of wrong/incorrect information furnished.

2. SSC Online Application Form: A candidate can log in to the SSC online system through his/her registered Email ID and password.

After that, the candidate needs to click on the ‘Apply’ link ‘Junior Engineer (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Quantity Surveying & Contracts) Examination’ section under ‘Latest Notifications’ tab.

He/She has the flexibility to choose the examination centre as per one’s preference.

Thereafter, the information concerning Photo/ Signature/ Biometric impression needs to be filled up automatically from the One-Time Registration data.

Application Fee

Candidates need to pay an application fee of Rs 100/- via any of the following payment modes like SBI Challan/ Net Banking, BHIM UPI, Credit or Debit cards, etc.

However, female candidates, candidates belonging to the SC/ST category, Persons with Disability (PwD) and Ex-servicemen are exempted from paying the application fees.

SSC JE Admit Card

SSC has not yet released the SSC JE admit card 2020. The expected date for the same is September 2020. Candidates willing to appear will be notified regarding the availability of SSC JE 2020 admit card.

Applicants who are taking the Junior Engineer exam can download the SSC JE Admit Card from the official website of SSC (ssc.nic.in).

They should carry it to the examination centre along with a Passport-size photo affixed on it on the scheduled exam day.
