Sat Examination 2020 is an international standardized test required for admission into most of the colleges in the United States. It is also accepted in colleges in Australia, the United Kingdom, Singapore and Canada. SAT is developed and published by the College Board. It is administered by Educational Testing Services worldwide on behalf of the College Board in over 25,000 test centers across 192 countries.

Latest: SAT home-based test has been suspended amid COVID-19 crisis. The authority stated that the lack of uninterrupted internet connectivity is major reason behind the suspension of exam.

SAT Test is conducted 7 times annually depending upon the region. It is held at least 5 times a year in most countries. SAT registration costs between USD 52.50 to USD 101.50 depending upon the country. It was taken by 1.7 million students across the world in 2017.

• SAT is 3 hours long paper-pencil test.
• It has four sections – Reading; Writing and Language; Mathematics (no calculator); Mathematics (calculator use allowed).
• A fifth section of essay writing (50 minutes) is optional. It is, however, required by some colleges.
• The score range is between 400-1600 for overall test.

SAT Subject Test

• SAT Subject Tests are for specific subjects required by colleges for admission.
• 20 Subject Tests are available in five general areas – English, History, Languages, Mathematics and Science.
• The tests are generally available six times in a year.
• Each Subject Test is of one hour duration.
• Students can take up to three Subject Test on a test day.
• One cannot take SAT and SAT Subject Tests on the same day.
• Language with Listening test are available only in November.

SAT Eligibility

• No eligibility criteria
• Students who are 12 years or younger in age can only register by mail
• Students in eighth grade or below must not include a photo in their registration

• Special accommodations can be requested for students with disabilities at the time of registration

2. Fill the application form by providing Personal Information, High School Information, and Contact Information

5. Upload a front facing clear photograph of headshot
6. Check out and pay the application fee using credit card or PayPal
7. Print the admission ticket

Registration by Mail

One needs to register by mail, if:

• Requesting testing closer to home
• Requesting Sunday testing for the first time
• Paying by check or money order
• Younger than 13 years old
• Unable to upload a digital photo in the online registration process
• Registering through an SAT international representative

Rescheduling, Cancelling or Changing SAT

Students can request a change in test date or center or test: SAT to SAT with Essay or SAT to SAT Subject test or vice versa

1. Log in to the College Board profile to make any changes
2. Make the required changes before the deadline
3. Pay the fee applicable using credit card or PayPal
4. Click on Update
5. Print the updated admission ticket

• Additional fee along with registration fee (Extra 49$) is applicable for students taking the test outside the United States and U.S. Territories.
• Service charges are applicable for services like score verification, rescheduling the test, etc.

Fee Waiver

• The set fee can be waived for students from low-income families

  • Annual family income falls within the Income Eligibility Guidelines set by the USDA Food and Nutrition Service

  • Lives in federally subsidized public housing or a foster home, or is homeless
  • A ward of the state or an orphan.

SAT Exam Pattern

• SAT is a paper-pencil test
• It is 3 hours long while SAT with Essay is 3 hours 50 minutes long
• SAT has four components – Reading test, Writing and Language test, Mathematics test without calculator, and Mathematics test with calculator
• Essay component is optional. It is required by some college. Students need to opt for it as per the college they wish to apply for.
• Score scale ranges between 400-1600
• Score scales for Reading and Writing & Language components are 200-800; for Mathematics – 2 to 8
• Essay results are evaluated separately

SAT Syllabus

SAT test focuses on accessing skills and knowledge acquired by students in the high school education. Each section tests the skills required to succeed in college.

Reading Test

• Multiple choice questions based on passages and informational graphics
• Some questions consist of informational graphics like tables, graphs, and charts
• The test includes –
  • A passage from a classic or contemporary work of U.S. or world literature.
  • One passage or a pair of passages from either a U.S. founding document or a text in the Great Global Conversation. For e.g.: The U.S. Constitution or a speech by Nelson Mandela
  • A passage about economics, psychology, sociology, or some other social science.
  • Two science passages (or one passage and one passage pair) examining foundational concepts and developments in Earth science, biology, chemistry, or physics.

Writing and Language Test

• Multiple choice questions based on passages
• Some passages have informational graphics like tables, graphs, and charts
• Questions are based on sentence structure, usage, and punctuation.
• Students required to change words, clauses, sentences, and punctuation to fix the mistakes in the sentences.
• The topics include verb tense, parallel construction, subject-verb agreement, and comma use as well.

Mathematics Test

• The test is divided into two sections – Math Test–Calculator and Math Test–No Calculator.
• Most questions are multiple choice while some are grid-ins
• Grid-in questions require students to solve a question and fill in the answer derived in the space given

  • Ratios, Rates, Proportional Relationships, Scale Drawings, Percentages
  • Polynomials, Linear, Quadratic, Exponential Models, and Equations

SAT Result

• SAT Scores are usually released three weeks after the test day.
• SAT score reports include –
  • The total score
  • Sectional score
  • Sub score (marks scored in each types of questions)
  • Essay score (if applicable)
  • Student’s percentile
• Score reports can be accessed via College Board profile
  • Click on My Organizer.
  • Click on SAT Scores
  • Click on  Access My Scores  
  • Enter username and password
  • Click on “My Test Scores” box
  • Your SAT score will be displayed on screen

• Students are required to send their score reports by phone or mail to the colleges they are eligible for
• Score choice can be used for the above purpose
• Students can send up to four score reports to colleges for free; prior to which additional fee will be charged.

SAT Score

• The raw score achieved by students is converted to a scale of 200-800 for each section.
• The total score is in the range of 400-1600.

SAT Score Verification

• Students can request Score Verification for a charge, in case they are not satisfied with their scores.
• The request can be made till five months after the test date.
• Booklet with SAT questions and answered marked by the student is provided.
• In some case, the entire answer sheet is scored again manually.
• If any errors are found in the scoring, the verification charges are refunded.
• The scores updated automatically after the verification.
• Students can request this service online or by mail by filling the SAT Score Verification form.

SAT Score Cancellation

• If a student feels he/she has not performed well on his/her SAT, he/she can request an SAT Score Cancellation.
• The request must be received before 11:59 P.M. on the Thursday following the test date
• This service cannot be availed online or by phone due to signature requirement
• The request can be made – at the test center and after leaving the test center

At the Test Center

• Ask the coordinator at the end of the test for a Request to Cancel Test Score form
• Complete the form
• Submit it with the coordinator

After Leaving the Test Center

• Download the form from the College Board website
• Information to be provided for score cancellation –
  • Test date
  • Test center number
  • Name of test you are canceling—either the SAT or SAT Subject Test(s)
  • Name, address, sex, birth date and registration number
  • Signature
• Send a written request with signature along with the completed form via fax or mail.
• The mail or fax label must read: “Attention: SAT Score Cancellation“.
• The cancellation fee can be paid by check or money order.
