The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was set up in 1951 in Kharagpur and today the total number of IITs stands at 23. The IITs are are autonomous public institutes of higher education, and are governed by the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961 which has declared them as institutions of national importance. They are considered as the premier engineering colleges in India, and it is extremely competititve to get an admission into their BTech program.
In 2019, the total number of BTech seats in all the IITs put together were 11,277. So of all the students who appeared for JEE Advanced 2019, only 0.6% finally got an admission into one of the IITs.

Eight of the 23 IITs feature in the Top 10 of the MHRD-NIRF 2020 rankings. The MHRD-NIRF ranking is based broadly on five parameters, namely list of IITs in India

Entrance Exams For Admission To IITs
