The Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs) are autonomous institutions offering technical education focused on the Information Technology and Communication Studies. IIITs have gained popularity among students are considered among the top colleges only after Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and National Institutes of Technology (NITs).
There are a total of 25 IIITs in India, five of which are listed as the Institutes of National Importance while the remaining 18 IIITs are set up on the Public-Private Partnership (PPP) model.

In the NIRF 2020 rankings released for top engineering colleges in India, IIIT Hyderabad have debuted and also it ranked first among the all the IIITs. IIITDM Jabalpur jumped to rank 81, the institute ranked at 75 in 2019, while IIIT Allahabad moved to 103 while institute ranked at 82 in 2019. Types of Courses Offered at IIITs
While a majority of the IIITs offer under-graduate and post-graduate programmes in IT and communication, IIITDM Kanchipuram, IIITDM Kurnool and IIIT Bhagalpur also offer B.Tech/ M.Tech and Dual Degree programmes in Mechanical Engineering. Entrance Exams for Admissions at IIITs
All the IIITs, although autonomous, are linked to each other through a common admission process. Admission to UG engineering programmes offered at IIITs is done through JEE Mains exam. After NTA (National Testing Agency) coming into authority from 2018, the exam is held twice a year in January and April for admission to various IITs, NITs, IIITs and CFTIs.
