IIT Delhi-Established in 1961 as College of Engineering in Delhi, the Institute was later declared as an Institution of National Importance under the ‘Institutes of Technology (Amendment) Act, 1963’ and was renamed as ‘Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Delhi’. It was then granted the status of a Deemed University with powers to decide its own academic policy, conduct its own examinations, and award its own degrees. Since its inception, over 48,000 students have graduated from IIT Delhi in various disciplines, including Engineering, Physical Sciences, Management and Humanities & Social Sciences. Of these, nearly 5,000 students received PhD degrees.
- The campus of the Institute is built on an area of 325 acre and has all the basic amenities such as hospital, shopping centre, banks, post office, telecom centre, stadium, playing fields, etc. It also houses a swimming pool, gymnasium hall along with other facilities, including squash courts, hobbies workshops, seminar rooms, music rooms, amphitheatre and so on.
- The Institute is extending its boundaries with one extension campus being set-up at Sonepat and another one soon coming up in Jhajjar, Haryana. Both campuses are spread on a land of over 50 acre each.

IIT Delhi Schools
The Institute has 17 Centres of Excellence, out of which four are set up by IIT Delhi, eight are industry-sponsored and five are funded by sponsored projects. At present, the Institute offers more than 100 courses at UG, PG and PhD level. IIT Delhi Admission Process
IIT Delhi application process for BTech generally starts from September with JEE Main registrations. PG admissions, however, begin in March. Candidates seeking admission to IIT Delhi’s BTech, MTech, MSc and MDes programmes must apply on the official website of the relevant examination. For the rest of the programmes, aspirants can apply through the official website of the Institute. IIT Delhi admission process for the various programmes is listed in a brief below:
- IIT Delhi BTech admission is based on a candidate’s JEE Advanced rank, followed by JoSAA Counselling
- For admission to the MSc programme, candidates are required to qualify IIT JAM
- To secure admission to MBA, candidates must have a valid CAT score
- MTech and MDes admission is based on a candidate’s performance in GATE and CEED, respectively
- Admission to the MS(R) programme is offered directly on the basis of candidate’s score in GATE and/or written test conducted by IIT Delhi
- GATE/ UGC NET/ CSIR NET/ ICAR/ ICMR score holders or DST-Inspire scholarship holders are qualified for admission to IIT Delhi PhD programme
IIT Delhi Courses
The Institute offers over 100 courses in various streams of Science, Engineering, Design, Management, etc., with diverse specialisations. BTech is the flagship programme of IIT Delhi and it is a four-year programme. The duration of PG programmes such as MTech, MBA, MSc and MDes is two years each. IIT Delhi Placements
IIT Delhi placements 2020 broke all the previous years’ benchmarks with more than 1,100 job offers. The number of placements this year increased by 4% from 2018-19 placements drive. Approximately 85.6% of the total registered students (UG/PG) got placed. According to the placement data released by the Institute, over 430 organisations registered for the placement season in 2019-2020. IIT Delhi received job offers for more than 600 job profiles. The later stage of the IIT Delhi placement got disrupted due to the outbreak of COVID 19. However, the Institute managed to continue its second phase of placements through online mode and about 100 students bagged job offers during this phase as well. Some of the top recruiters that visited IIT Delhi campus for placements this year, included Microsoft, Intel, Goldman Sachs, UBER, Standard Chartered, Societe Generale, etc.

A similar trend can be noticed in both the years. The core has been the highest recruiting sector, followed by IT. Management sector, however, witnessed a fall of approximately 35% in 2019-20 placements. Other sectors such as Analytics, Consulting, Finance, etc, have seen marginal fluctuations.
IIT Delhi Scholarships
The Institute provides various scholarships for UG, PG and PhD students. All IIT Delhi scholarships offered under different categories are mentioned below:
- Institute Merit-cum-Means (MCM) Scholarship: The Institute offers Rs 1,000 per month to 25% of students under this scheme. It is offered to the meritorious undergraduate students in Engineering and Technology. The recipient is also exempted from paying the tuition fee. This scholarship can also be availed by MSc students whose parents’ income is less than Rs 4.5 LPA
- Institute Merit Prizes and Certificates: Top 7% of students from four-year BTech and five-year dual degree programmes are rewarded with an amount of Rs 2,500 each semester, up to 8th and 10th semester, respectively
- Institute Free Studentship: 10% of UG students are provided free studentship on the basis of means alone
- Scholarship provision for SC/ST/PD students: IIT Delhi exempts tuition fee of all SC/ST/PD students, irrespective of their guardians/ parents’ income
- Donor Scholarship: Several other scholarships have been established by grants from individuals, trusts and organisations
- For MTech, MS (R) and MDes students: The Institute does not grant any scholarships to the students of the aforementioned programmes. However, a scheme for financial assistance is in operation. Apart from the teaching/ research assistantships, there are numerous fellowships and scholarships instituted by industries and individuals for such students.
- For PhD candidates: There is no scholarship scheme for PhD students. However, a scheme for the award of teaching/ research assistantship for providing financial assistance to the students is in place. Under this scheme, those students, who are admitted on a full-time basis, are offered an assistantship, provided they are not getting any other equivalent fellowship.
