The first day of the Chithirai month is celebrated as the Tamil New Year by Tamilians all over the world. The festival is also called “Puthuandu Vazthukal” which means Happy New Year in Tamilian, and Varusha Pirappu. This year, Puthandu 2021 will be celebrated on Wednesday, April 14. Interestingly, this day is also celebrated as a New Year by people of various states like– Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Kerala, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Odisha, Bengal, Assam and Bihar.
People celebrate the Tamil New Year in different ways– some get up early, take a bath, dress up in new clothes and visit the temple to pray to God for a prosperous year full of new opportunities in life; some others celebrate it by following the traditions of Chithirai Vishu, in which a tray is decorated and filled with offerings which signify wealth and good health.
This year due to the Coronavirus pandemic, Puthuandu Vazthukal celebrations will be low-key and people are expected to stay safe at home and maintain social distancing while in public.
