The University of Alabama at Birmingham was established in 1969. The highly-ranked public university is amongst the three major research institutes in Alabama. Started as an academic extension center in 1936, the university became an independent institution in 1969. The institute began operating in an old house that dwelled in central Birmingham with 116 students. It is accredited to the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools ever since 1970. Its collaboration with UAHSF resulted in the establishment of the UAB Health System. Today, it is not only an internationally renowned research institute but also a popular academic health center.
The university campus is situated in Southside, a leading cosmopolitan neighborhood in Birmingham. It comprises of 100 buildings which include the college blocks, Recreation Center, UAB Health System, libraries and residence halls. UAB has two libraries that possess a comprehensive collection of rare and unique publications, photos, documents, etc. The Recreation Center has three floors that house game rooms, aerobics studios, gyms, etc. There are 6 residence halls on the campus named the Blazer Hall, Camp Hall, Blount Hall, Rast Hall, Denman Hall, and New Freshmen Residence Hall. Each of these residences provides on-campus accommodation to students. UAB offers Blazer Express, a free shuttle service that enables students and employees to commute to, from, and around the university.
