The National Institute of Puducherry (NITPY) was established by Government of India on October 30, 2009. It was a part of 11th five-year plan (2007-2012). NIT Puducherry is one of the ten new NITs. In addition, it is one among the 31 NITs acknowledged as Institute of National Importance by Government of India. The admission was commenced from the academic year 2010-11 onwards.
NIT Puducherry grants admission to BTech, MTech and PhD programmes. For BTech programmes, students are admitted through JEE Main. MTech students are selected based on their marks obtained in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE). Students to the PhD programmes get admission based on the Institute entrance test and interview. Out of the total seats 50% seats are reserved for applicants of Puducherry, Karaikal, Mahe, Yanam and 50% are filled by the applicants of other areas.

Scholarships
NIT Puducherry offers following scholarships to the students
- Scholarship for MBC students from Tamil Nadu: Tamil Nadu Government provides scholarship to students of Tamil Nadu belonging to BC/MBC/DNC communities pursuing UG/PG courses in the Government Instiitutes of India like IIT, IIM, IIIT, NIT and Central Government Universities. In the first instance, only 100 students will get the benefit of this scholarship.
- Scholarship for Physically Disabled Students: Government of India through Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment implemented scholarship for physically disabled students. The details are available on www.disabilityaffairs.gov.in.
- Directorate of Higher and Technical Education (DHTE)-Puducherry Scholarship scheme
- Scholarship from Swami Dayanand Charitable Education Foundation (SDEF)
- Rajarshi Shahu Maharaj Merit Scholarship- for SC students from Maharashtra
Placements
Pre-placement training programs and placement activities are conducted by the Training and Placement Cell of NIT Puducherry. The placement cell circulates job application form filled by companies with candidates to keep them aware about the job profile.
