The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign is a public research university situated in the twin cities of Urbana and Champaign in Illinois, US. Founded in 1867, this university is a part of the Association of American Universities and is classified as an R1 Doctoral Research University under the Carnegie Classification of Institutions of Higher Education, which denotes the highest research activity. Ever since its inception, the university has made several accomplishments such as the invention of the first practical light-emitting diode, the invention of the third branch in the ‘tree of life’, creation of the first browser for World Wide Web and contribution to the discovery of the magnetic resonance imaging.

The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign has the third largest university library in the United States and one of the largest public libraries in the world. It has 13 million volumes in its 37 unit libraries. Annually, 53 million people visit the library’s online catalog. The university comprises of 15 colleges and instructional units – College of Agricultural, Consumer and Environmental Sciences, College of Applied Health Sciences, Gies College of Business, College of Education, Grainger College of Engineering, College of Fine and Applied Arts, Graduate College, School of Labor and Employment Relations, College of Law, College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, School of Information Sciences, College of Media, Carle Illinois College of Medicine, School of Social Work, and College of Veterinary Medicine.
