The University of Calcutta Established in 1857, is amongst the premier universities in India. The university has been ranked 5th by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), Ministry of HRD, Government of India in 2021. Notably, the University of Calcutta has been awarded the 1st position among the state universities in QS BRICS & QS India University Rankings 2019.

The University of Calcutta offers undergraduate, postgraduate, doctoral, Diploma and certificate programmes in various faculties of studies including Arts, Agriculture, Science, Commerce, Engineering & Technology, Management, Law, Journalism, Fine Arts, Education and Library Science.

Admission process

For admission to undergraduate programmes, students are selected on the basis of merits in class 12th qualifying examinations. 60% of the seats in postgraduate programmes are reserved for undergraduate students of the University of Calcutta. Students from different universities are eligible for the rest 40% of the PG seats. Admissions to these seats are undergone through an entrance test which is conducted between July and September. For PhD courses, the university conducts a Research Eligibility Test (RET). The application for all the programmes is done online through the official website of the university. Notifications are issued in May.

Placement and Salary Trends

Students of the University of Calcutta are recruited by top multinational companies including Aegis Global, Cognizant, Axis Bank, TCS, Wipro, HSBC, PWC, Tata Motors, Samsung, NSE, ITC, Reliance and Nestle. The University of Calcutta has partnered with various government agencies and private corporations for placement, research and training workshops. Some of its partner organisations include BSNL, ONGC, CSIR, SBI, GSI, DLF, Albert David and Cognizant. The average salary package offered to students was 3 LPA in the last academic year. However, management and engineering students are hired at much higher CTC.
