IIT BHU Varanasi- was established by Madan Mohan Malviya in 1919 as Banaras Engineering College. It was later designated as an IIT in 2012. IIT BHU was the first institute to offer degree courses in the fields of Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Metallurgy and Pharmaceutics. Since then, it has grown to introduce a number of new programmes.

IIT BHU was ranked 11 for engineering by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) in 2019 and 10th overall.

The admission process of IIT BHU is mentioned below:

• IIT BHU UG admission is offered based on a candidate’s rank in JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA Counselling
• The institution grants admission to the MTech programme on the basis of the applicants’ GATE score
• IIT BHU PhD admission is done on the basis of GATE/NET/GPAT score

A number of international scholarships such as Rhodes Scholarships, Japanese government scholarships for research students, and Korean government scholarship programmes are given to PhD students from India and abroad. Fellowships are available for SC students.
