IIT Bombay– Established in 1958, Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay was the first to have laid its foundation stone with assistance from UNESCO. In 1961, it was declared as an ‘Institute of National Importance’ by the Parliament of India. Over the years, the Institute has maintained to rank high across the categories of Engineering and Management. It is a fully residential institute with 15 hostels and excellent amenities for sports and other recreational facilities. The campus also houses several advanced research and development (R&D) facilities, including sophisticated state-of-the-art laboratories furnished by industry. IIT Bombay strives to create a safe and comfortable environment for all women students on the campus. It instituted a Gender Cell in 2002 to promote gender sensitivity and discourage gender bias, hostility or sexual harassment on campus.
- The Institute offers more than 70 courses at UG, PG and PhD level. These courses are primarily offered in the streams of Engineering, Technology, Science, Management and Design. It has also created a niche for its innovative short-term courses through continuing education and distance-learning programmes.
- All the courses, except for Management programmes, are conducted through 16 departments of IIT Bombay. The Management programmes, on the other hand, are offered by the Institute’s on-campus school- Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management (SJMSOM IIT Bombay). Additonally, there are 19 centres on the campus which include Centre for Distance Engineering Education Programme, National Centre for Aerospace Innovation and Research, Tata Center for Technology and Design, Centre for Research in Nanotechnology and Science, Centre for Aerospace Systems Design and Engineering and many others.
- IIT Bombay has signed multiple MoUs with several universities abroad for student exchange programmes, under which a student can do course work and/or project work at one of these universities.
- Some of the notable universities with which the Institute has signed MoUs include Augsburg University of Applied Sciences, Central University of Finance and Economics, Boston College, Charles Darwin University, Kyoto University, etc. IIT Bombay also has ongoing academic and research collaborations with many national and international universities, governments and industries so as to keep pace with expanding frontiers of knowledge and global developments.
- The Research Park Foundation at this Institute is a facilitator that brings the industry closer for R&D collaboration. Besides, it provides a diverse range of expertise in various sectors, such as Aviation, Chemical, Energy, Automotive, IT and Telecom, etc.
Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE) is being hosted by IIT Bombay, which supports the research and incubation of technological ideas that can be translated into entrepreneurial ventures. It has been selected as a ‘Centre of Excellence’ by the Department of Science and Technology, Government of India, with funding support to scale up its activities. It has also been approved by Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Council (BIRAC) to set up a Bio-incubator called ‘BioNEST’ to support the bio-med-tech startups. Till now, SINE has given birth to more than 170 start-ups with over 550 entrepreneurs.
While the academic curriculum forms a considerable part of the experience at IIT Bombay, the Institute also organises a number of fests and students are encouraged to participate in them. Its annual Science and Technology festival ‘Techfest’ and annual cultural festival ‘Mood Indigo’ the largest college festivals across Asia.

IIT Bombay Admission Process
IIT Bombay admission to undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral programmes is granted through a candidate’s score in the respective national-level entrance exams. IT Bombay Courses
The Institute offers over 70 courses with multiple specialisations at UG, PG and PhD level. It also offers a number of integrated programmes. The duration of UG programmes is four years, while that of the PG and PhD programmes is two and three years, respectively. The integrated programmes are typically offered for a duration of five years. Admission to all these programmes is based on a candidate’s performance in the respective qualifying exam. Candidates with BTech degree from an IIT and a minimum CPI/ CGPA of 8.0 are exempted from GATE requirement for admission to the MTech programme. Placements at IIT Bombay are conducted through a Placement Common Aptitude Test (PCAT) instead of the individual recruitment tests conducted by the companies. The first phase of IIT Bombay placements (2019-20) bagged more than 1,300 offers from over 250 companies that visited the campus.
