IIT Madras (IITM) is a public-funded engineering institution based in Chennai. Founded in 1959, IITM was the third establishment under the Institutes of Technology Act (1961) of Indian Government. The institute has been rated the top engineering institution by the National Institutional Ranking Framework for four consecutive years – 2016, 2017, 2018 and 2019.
IITM has 16 academic departments and numerous research centres that offer postgraduate and undergraduate programmes in distinct disciplines of engineering, technology and pure sciences.

IIT Madras Admission Process
The candidates must fill an online application form first to secure admission at IITM. The admission process is mentioned below:
- IITM BTech admission is offered based on a candidate’s rank in JEE Advanced followed by JoSAA Counselling
- CAT score is considered to offer admission to the MBA programme
- Students are admitted to MSc programme through IIT JAM
- The institution grants admission to the MTech programme on the basis of the applicants’ GATE score
- For 5-year integrated Master of Arts programmes, the applicants must clear the IITM specific Humanities and Social Sciences Entrance Examination (HSEE)

The Training and Placement Office of IITM maintains relationships with various companies and organisations to provide job opportunities to students. It invites several companies and organisations to the campus for placement drives. In the academic year of 2018-19, 1151 students were hired in leading organisations. Top recruiters of IITM were Google, Microsoft, Myntra, PayPal, TCS, Wipro, Philips, American Express, Kotak, Amazon, Flipkart, Citibank, IBM and Reliance.

IITM offers various scholarships to meritorious, talented and financially weak students under the following categories:
- Merit-cum-Means Scholarships granted by the institute, state and central governments to students whose parents have an annual income below Rs 4.5 lakh
- Merit-based scholarships like Aditya Birla Scholarship, Inlakhs Scholarship and ST Engineering Scholarship based on JEE rank and semester performance
- Merit-cum-Means Scholarship (GoI) given by the Ministry of Minority Affairs to the Christian, Muslim, Buddhist, Sikh and Parsi candidates
